Craftsman Cable & Drum Replacement: The Tampa Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Craftsman-compatible cable and drum replacement parts throughout Tampa, with most jobs running $130 to $250 installed, parts and labor included. If your garage door cable has snapped or the drum has started chewing through the cable, we can usually get it done the same day we see it. You’ll typically discover the problem when the door suddenly lurches to one side, makes a sharp grinding sound, or refuses to open at all because one cable is dangling loose.

Most Tampa homeowners call us after the door has already failed. A frayed cable gives little warning. The drum, the grooved wheel that winds the cable as the door moves, can develop sharp edges over time that eat through even a new cable in weeks. This is a fix we do often, and we do it with a written price before any work starts.

Which Craftsman Models This Applies To

Craftsman garage doors have shipped under several model lines over the years, and the cable and drum setup varies between them. The 1/2-horsepower and 3/4-horsepower Craftsman openers from the early 2000s are the ones we see most often with cable failures, but the cable and drum themselves are door hardware, not opener hardware, so what matters is the door’s torsion setup.

Here’s the part most owners don’t know: Craftsman doors built after roughly 2008 typically use a 7-foot or 8-foot cable length matched to the door height, and the drum is specific to whether you have torsion springs or extension springs. Pre-2008 Craftsman doors, particularly the ones installed in Tampa’s older neighborhoods, often used a smaller 4-inch drum with a cable that’s now harder to source as a Craftsman-branded part. The model tag on the door panel or the inside edge of the track will tell us what we’re working with before we quote.

We install both OEM Craftsman parts and quality aftermarket equivalents. For cables, the aftermarket versions cut from aircraft-grade steel are in most cases equal or better than the original. For drums, OEM matters more, because a mismatched drum groove radius will wear a new cable unevenly from day one. We’ll show you the failed part and explain which direction makes sense before you spend a dollar.

Signs Your Craftsman Cable & Drum Replacement Is Failing

Signs Your Craftsman Cable & Drum Replacement Is Failing
  • Door only opens partway and stops. One cable has thrown off its drum and is binding against the track. The opener keeps pushing, but the door won’t track straight.
  • Loose, dangling cable. A cable that’s hanging slack means the drum has stopped taking up tension. The door is now supported on one side only, which puts dangerous load on the remaining cable and the brackets holding it.
  • Frayed strands visible near the bottom bracket. This is where cables fail first, because that bracket bears the most load when the door is closed. Once you can see broken strands, the cable is days or weeks from snapping.
  • Door rubs or scrapes on one side while moving. A worn drum with a sharp groove edge is feeding cable unevenly, pulling the door slightly off level each cycle. Over time, the rollers and hinges take the abuse.
  • Loud popping sound followed by the door slamming shut. That’s a snapped cable. Do not try to open the door manually after this, because the remaining cable and spring are holding all the tension.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Craftsman cable and drum replacement in Tampa runs $130 to $250 installed, and that’s the range we work within for most single and double doors. What drives the top of that range is the drum condition: if the drum needs replacing alongside the cable, the part cost and labor both step up. If the drum is reusable and only the cable failed, you’re at the lower end.

Every quote includes the parts, on-site labor, a full track-and-tension check, and adjustment so the door lifts evenly and balances correctly. You get the price in writing before we start, we photograph the failed component before and the completed work after, and you keep that photo record. If something’s off after we leave, the 365-Day Done Right Promise means we come back and make it right.

What you can safely do: check the model tag, look for loose cable slack, and note where the fraying is. That’s useful information when you call us, and it costs nothing. What you should not do is re-wind a cable onto a drum or re-tension a door with a snapped cable still in place. The torsion system on a Craftsman door holds enough energy to break a hand, and the cable is what keeps that energy from releasing through the wrong parts.

We’ve seen Tampa garages where a homeowner tried a YouTube fix and ended up with a bent track and a door off its hinges. The repair cost more than the original cable replacement would have. Marcus Deller and our crew do this work daily. Name the part. Quote the price. Do the work. Call (656) 223-3036 and we’ll come see exactly what failed.
